What is the FESS EWA?
The Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Experienced Worker Assessment (FESS EWA) is an industry and JIB/ECS approved assessment for experienced FESS engineers wishing to prove competence in this sector and obtain a ECS Gold card.
Who can complete the FESS EWA?
FESS Engineers with a minimum of evidencable 5 years industry experience.
What does the completion of the FESS EWA lead to?
After achieving the BPEC FESS experienced worker assessment, candidates can obtain an ECS Gold card in their chosen pathway and card type.
What JIB ECS cross hatch gold cards can a candidate obtain after completing the FESS EWA?
Candidates can choose the following pathways:
- Fire
- Security
- Combined (Fire & Security)
Candidates can then choose which crosshatch card type they wish to obtain. This will then affect the type of assessment they complete at their chosen BPEC approved centre:
- Full Technician
- Installation, test & Commissioning
- Installation only
- Test & Commission only
- Maintenance only

What Pre-requisites are required to enrol onto the FESS EWA?
Candidates wishing to enrol on the FESS EWA will need to be able to evidence through a detailed CV and Continuous professional development (CPD) a minimum of 5 years demonstratable industry experience in their chosen pathway.
Do I need to have obtained a FESS operative card before completing the FESS EWA
Yes, you will need to create a My ECS account and pass/achieve the ECS operative card. Weblink below for the MyECS account login.
How do I find out where a centre is to enrol onto the FESS EWA?
Please look at the find a centre section of the BPEC website to find centre approved for the FESS EWA
How long does the FESS EWA certificate last for?
There is no timeframe on this FESS EWA certificate, candidates achieving this will hold it for a lifetime.
How long does it take to complete the FESS EWA?
Candidates wishing to complete the FESS EWA, once enrolled at a centre will have 12 months to complete the assessment from the initial date of registration with BPEC. The assessment is designed to be completed once the candidate supporting evidence folder is achieved and should take no more than one day in a BPEC approved centre to achieve.
