From Adversity to Opportunity: How Training in Plumbing and Heating Transforms Lives

A meeting on World Plumbing Day between Neil Collishaw, Chief Executive of BPEC, and Louchavan Lemard, Director of PH247, highlighted the powerful role the plumbing and heating profession can play in changing lives.

The two had connected on social media before meeting in person during Louchavan’s visit to the Midlands, quickly recognising shared values around raising standards, expanding access to training, and creating meaningful opportunities within the industry.

A journey shaped by resilience

Growing up, Louchavan experienced deprivation, poverty and periods of homelessness from a young age, shaping his determination to build a better future through practical skills and hard work.

“Plumbing and heating gave me more than a career. It gave me structure, purpose and a route out of poverty,” he says.

Over time, he came to see the wider impact of the profession.

“It is not just about fixing systems — it is about protecting homes, supporting families, solving problems, and making a genuine difference to people’s everyday lives.”

The role of training and qualifications

Both Neil and Louchavan agree that structured training and recognised qualifications are critical to success — not just for individuals, but for the long-term integrity of the industry.

After completing his apprenticeship, Louchavan went on to achieve Apprentice of the Year at both Level 2 and Level 3, later completing an HNC in Building Services and progressing into project management. He has continued his professional development through qualifications including BPEC Water Regulations, Unvented Hot Water and heat pump training.

“Learning should never stop,” he says. “Proper training is essential not only for personal growth, but also for raising standards, protecting consumers, and strengthening the future of the profession.”

Neil Collishaw added:

“At BPEC, we were established to create accessible, high-quality learning opportunities for people from all backgrounds. Qualifications play a vital role in giving individuals the skills, confidence and credibility to succeed in the plumbing and heating profession.”

Creating opportunity through shared values

Louchavan has taken those principles forward through PH247, a business built not only on technical delivery, but on creating opportunities for disadvantaged young adults.

“For me, business is not just about profit — it is about impact. If we can build something successful while creating opportunities for others, that is something truly meaningful.”

This aligns closely with BPEC’s long-standing mission to widen access to training and support progression within the industry.

Neil Collishaw commented:

“Louchavan’s journey is a powerful example of how our industry can transform lives when people are given the opportunity to learn a trade and develop their skills.”

A message for the next generation

Reflecting on his journey, Louchavan encourages others to take initiative and back themselves: “Where you start does not have to define where you finish.”
