Neil Collishaw

Chief Executive Officer

Experience

Neil has over 30 years’ experience within the building services engineering (BSE) sector. Neil started as an apprentice, which soon led to him running a successful plumbing and heating business. Neil has held senior roles in Further Education, managing a large building services department, and also worked as a Senior Manager for SummitSkills, a Sector Skills Council for the BSE sector.

BPEC Journey

Neil became BPEC CEO in January 2019. Prior to this, since joining BPEC in 2014, Neil held a variety of other senior positions at BPEC which included Deputy CEO, Head of Innovation & Development and Head of the BPEC Charity.

Interests

Outside of work, Neil enjoys spending time with his wife, two daughters and son-in-law (he remains adamant that he is far too young to have grandchildren!). Neil is a keen sportsman; playing tennis for a local club and golfing occasionally. His friends describe him as a very competitive person, however he fervently disputes this claim!

Matt Skelding

Head of Operations and Development

Experience

Matt has worked in the plumbing industry since 1991, with almost 15 years’ experience in education, qualifications and assessment. Matt’s first 5 years in education were working in Further Education, where he developed as a Grade 1 Tutor, becoming a Subject Learning Coach and Mentor after attaining his teaching, assessing and verification qualifications.  Matt then moved on to work in the private education sector as Director of Learning for a multi-site training organisation, specialising in Construction and Building Services where he was responsible for the quality of teaching and learning for all programmes as well as setting the strategy of the organisation.

BPEC Journey

Matt joined BPEC as a Development Manager in October 2015, and then planned and managed the development and implementation of the BPEC End-point Assessment Organisation.

In January 2019, Matt took a new role at BPEC as Head of Operations and Development.

Interests

Matt is a season ticket holder at Rotherham United and an avid stand-up comedy fan; he assures us that these activities are completely unrelated!  His favourite quote is attributed to Henry Ford: “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t…  You’re right”.

Jack Henderson

Head of Finance and Business Services

Experience

Prior to joining BPEC, Jack spent seventeen years as the Accountant at St Paul’s Cathedral during which time the cathedral underwent a £40 million, 10 year, restoration programme which required maintaining good controls of both costs and grant income.

Previously he had worked as a director for a facilities management company with responsibility for finance, IT and HR. He has also worked in the engineering, financial services and distribution sectors as well as a spell of running his own recruitment business.

BPEC Journey

Jack joined BPEC as head of Finance and Business Services in September 2019. Jack manages the finance, IT, HR and facilities teams at BPEC.

Interests

Jack recently moved to Derbyshire with his wife to be nearer to both children and grandchildren. Outside of work Jack enjoys cycling, painting and following football to the extent that he is seriously considering swelling the numbers of season ticket holders to four at Mickleover Sports FC!

Steve Ward

Business Area Manager (Certification Body)

How can Steve help?

Steve looks after the Certification Body (CB).  On technical or compliance issues, Steve is able to offer advice and guidance about all things ACS, OFTEC and other CB related products and services when Rob Barker and Grant Davies are unavailable.

Experience

Steve started working in the industry in 1981 as an apprentice Gas Service Engineer with British Gas. Steve completed his Gas Service Engineer qualification and apprenticeship in 1984, and continued to work for the company until British Gas demerged in 1996 when Steve transferred to Transco/National Grid as a First Call Operative for gas escapes/emergencies and meter installations. 

In 2003 Steve left National Grid to work as a Trainer/Assessor/IV. During his time at the training and assessment centre, Steve earned promotion to the position of Business Unit Head in the Gas Department.

BPEC Journey

In 2007 Steve joined the team at BPEC Certification as Development Manager. During 2010/2011 Steve was integral in the application process for BPEC’s approval as an Awarding Organisation, subsequently achieving the position of Certification Manager for the AO and the CB. 

During his time at BPEC, Steve has carried out External Quality Assurance visits to approved training centres and colleges. Throughout his career, Steve has continued to maintain his industry competencies via achievement of relevant qualifications, assessments of competence and CPD.

Interests

Outside of work Steve is a huge music fan and attends as many live events he is allowed to. None of this modern stuff mind. Frank Zappa once said “Without music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid.”

If Steve finds he has any passes spare you might also find him on the bank fishing.

One of Steve’s favourite proverbs is  “Fine words butter no parsnips”!

Mally Butters

Business Area Manager (Services – Publications & Short Courses)

How can Mally help?

Mally looks after BPEC’s publications and our short courses. On technical or compliance issues, Mally will be able to offer advice and guidance relating to managed learning programmes, training manuals and requests for new products when Dave Massey is unavailable.

Experience

Mally has over 35 years’ industry experience, with a 2:1 Honours Degree in Education together with a wealth of transferable skills gained over the years.

Mally started out as a time served plumber and heating engineer, working in both domestic and commercial environments before moving into contracting with a large company as a pipefitter/welder working on large installations across the country. Mally then moved to work for his Local Authority as a Supervisor running gas and plumbing contracts, before moving into education for nine years at Grimsby Institute working in a number of roles as a lecturer, trainer, assessor, internal verifier and Gas Centre Manager.

Mally joined BPEC in January 2012 as Training Manager for BPEC Services.

Interests

Mally enjoys worldwide travel, spending time with his family and grand-kids. Mally has recently discovered gin and now regularly enjoys the odd tipple or two!

Kev Clark

Business Area Manager (Awarding and End-point Assessment Organisation)

How can Kev help?

Kev oversees the Awarding and End-point Assessment Organisations. On technical or compliance issues, Kev will support you with anything related to qualifications or end-point assessment when Garry Glover, Jon Bexon and Paul Wilson are unavailable.

Experience

Kev has worked in the Plumbing & Heating Industry since the age of 17, originally starting his career as an apprentice with the local authority and completing a four-year apprenticeship. During his apprenticeship Kev gained experience in Plumbing, Gas and H&V. To date Kev has over 22 years’ experience in the Plumbing & Heating Industry.

Kev achieved QTS and has the experience of working in both FE and private training provider environments. As well as Plumbing & Gas, Kev is qualified in Health & Safety, holds assessor, Lead Internal/external verifier qualifications and has worked with several Awarding Organisations.

BPEC Journey

Kev started working for BPEC in 2013 as Operations Manager for the Awarding Organisation, and in 2019 was successfully appointed as Certification Manager.

Interests

Kev is a keen football fan and qualified coach, his favourite quote is closely linked to his “Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard”

Grant Davies

Development Manager

How can Grant help?

Grant works for the Certification Body in development and is the man responsible for carrying out technical revisions when the annual update disk is issued to CBs.  Any questions relating to Certification Body documents and updates should be directed to Grant.

Experience

Grant has more than 40 years’ experience in the plumbing and heating industry. After starting as an apprentice plumber in 1974, Grant worked in the industry for 20 years undertaking work on domestic and light commercial plumbing and heating systems.

Grant became a trainer/assessor in 1997 and after initially delivering training courses he then became involved in the development of a number of courses and gas training modules, being actively involved in gaining UKAS accreditation for Gas and Oil assessments.

As a Trainer / Assessor / Internal Verifier/ External Verifier, Grant later held the positions of Technical Reviewer/ Deputy Manager / General Manager at two large training and assessment centres, covering scheduling / producing training and assessment courses for Gas, Water and Oil operatives.

Grant then spent 6 years involved in producing new courses / updating existing training and assessment courses for the Gas, Solid Fuel, Oil, Water and Electrical industries before joining BPEC.

BPEC Journey

Grant joined BPEC in 2015 as a Development Manager to develop assessment documentation for the accredited certification scheme requirements.

Interests

Grant enjoys watching many sports, and is a Sheffield United season ticket holder. Grant has always had an interest in classic cars together with a love of caravanning.

Rob Barker

Senior Operations Manager

How can Rob help?

Rob works for the Certification Body (CB) and works operationally. If you work for a centre that wants advice and guidance on anything relating to compliance like centre resource requirement advice, EV arrangements or for advice on suspected or actual malpractice or maladministration, Rob will be able to offer support.

Experience

Rob began his career in the industry in 1982 as an apprentice Gas Service Engineer with British Gas achieving his Gas Service Engineer qualification and completing his apprenticeship in 1985, he continued to work for the company until British Gas demerged in 1996 he then transferred to Transco/National Grid as a First Call Operative for gas escapes/emergencies and meter installations along with various supervisory roles.

In 2003 Rob left National Grid and worked for Worcester Bosch as Service Engineer until 2005. He then worked for CORGI as their regional Inspector and then continuing in this role for Gas Safe Register.

BPEC Journey

In 2011 Rob joined the team at BPEC as an Operations Manager managing the BPEC Certification External Verification process including centre approval and surveillance and helping to maintain BPECs accreditation by UKAS.

Interests

Rob is married and has a daughter, his interests include keeping fit, history & travel.

Mike Maskrey

Technical Development Manager

How can Mike help?

Mike works for the Awarding Organisation, predominantly in Development as our technical author.  If you have any queries regarding our textbooks or teaching resources, Mike will be able to help you out.

Experience

Mike began his plumbing career at the age of 16 – a third generation plumber, Mike served a four year apprenticeship before joining his father’s plumbing and heating firm in 1982.

Mike is a Building Services Engineer/Plumber by trade and has spent 30 years as a lecturer in Plumbing and BSE both part and full time.

He has written several books on Plumbing and Heating and is now a highly respected author within the industry.

BPEC Journey

Mike joined BPEC as Technical Development Manager in April 2017.

Since joining BPEC, Mike has written a 412 page plumbing textbook, together with a range of supporting resources which have been developed alongside the BPEC Level 3 Diploma in Plumbing and Heating. Mike is currently in the process of writing textbooks and supporting resources for Phases 2 & 3 of the qualification.

Interests

Mike’s hobbies include Photography, Aviation and Family History, and he is a die-hard Notts County FC fan.

Dave Massey

Development Manager

How can Dave help?

Dave works for BPEC’s business area that develops and manages our publications and short courses.  Dave will deal with technical or compliance issues related to managed learning programmes and training manuals and will be the person to speak with if you have requests for new products.

Experience

Dave has more than than 20 years’ experience in the plumbing and heating industry. Holding a PGCE Dave has also been a Lecturer, assessor and internal verifier, and has also been an EQA with EAL where he was involved in quality assurance.

Dave joined BPEC in 2014 as a Development Manager within the Awarding Organisation. Dave’s role now is within BPEC Services where he specialises in BPEC Short Courses and Publications.

Garry Glover

Development Manager

How can Garry help?

Garry works for the Awarding and End-point Assessment Organisation, with a focus on EPA and managing the development process.  He can help out with enquires relating to qualification and end-point assessment documentation.  Likewise, if you want to feedback on new qualifications or end-point assessment Garry would love to hear from you.

Experience

Garry is a fully qualified plumber holding NVQ L3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating Engineer qualification, he also holds gas competencies CCN1, CENWAT, CKR1, HTR1, DAH1 and MET1.

Garry started teaching plumbing around 13 years ago working for MET-UK, a private plumbing and gas training company where he gained his assessor award.

In 2012 Garry became the main plumbing tutor at Full Circle Learning in Rotherham. Delivering L2 and L3 Plumbing qualifications to Morrison and Mears Group apprentices. Part of his time was spent working with Full Circle Learning’s parent company Route 1 Developments, this involved the development of the current BPEC L1/2/3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating qualifications. During 2015 Garry was involved with the development of a new plumbing and gas training and assessment facility at Rotherham United’s NYS for Mears Learning Ltd.

BPEC Journey

Garry continued to teach plumbing and gas at Mears Learning until joining BPEC during November of 2017 as the Development Manager for the Awarding Organisation.

Interests

Away from work, Garry likes to spend time with his family watching the kids play golf and football……and occasionally for his sins also punishes himself around Wath Golf club …oh the joy when it’s going right!!!

Paul Wilson

Operations Manager

How can Paul help?

Paul works for the Awarding and End-point Assessment Organisation and works operationally. If you work for a college or training centre that wants advice and guidance on anything relating to compliance, like centre resource requirement advice, EQA arrangements or for advice on suspected or actual malpractice or maladministration, Paul will be able to offer support.

Experience

Paul began his plumbing career at the age of 16 after leaving school and starting as an apprentice with a local plumbing company in his home town of Chesterfield. He attended Chesterfield College for four years where he gained his Level 3 NVQ in Mechanical Engineering Services (Plumbing – Domestic Gas Option). Paul has achieved over 16 years in the plumbing industry to date.

In 2013, Paul made the decision to move into Further Education, and started as a Plumbing Lecturer at Chesterfield College. During his time there Paul successfully gained his teaching, assessing and verification qualifications whilst also becoming Career Pathway Leader for Plumbing.

Paul joined BPEC in February 2019 as a Technical Business Support Manager before taking on the role of Operations Manager in August 2019.

Interests

In his spare time Paul plays football for a local team, goes to the gym and is a season ticket holder at Derby County.

Jon Bexon

Experience

Jon has been in the Plumbing and Gas industry since 1992. Jon completed his NVQ2 and NVQ3 at Wilmorton College in Derby before working for a number of large companies as a plumber/gas engineer.

In 2003 Jon made the move into Further Education, starting his teaching career at Stephenson College in Coalville as a lecturer. Jon remained at Stephenson College for 16 years, working in a number of roles as a lecturer, trainer, assessor, internal verifier and manager, and worked in both the plumbing and gas departments within the college.

Jon joined BPEC in February 2019 as a Technical Support Business Manager.

Interest

Outside of work, Jon’s interests are mountain biking, fishing and camping. Jon also loves a bit of karaoke, and can often be found behind the mic at weekends!
