Who is the BPEC Fire, Emergency and Security Extension of Scope Assessment for?

The assessment is designed only for candidates who already have achieved the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Technician (version 1.1) Apprenticeship Standard and were practically assessed in the Fire pathway and can demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental requirements of Security systems and who wish to demonstrate competency and professionalism and obtain an industry recognised competency card.

This assessment assured by BPEC has been developed to enable candidates who have achieved the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Technician (version 1.1) Apprenticeship Standard within the last 12 months of the apprenticeship achievement certification date to demonstrate their competencies in the pathway that was not practically assessed during the version 1.1 End point assessment:

  • Full Technician – Full scope
    OR
  • Installation Test and Commissioning Technician – Limited scope
  • Installation Technician – Limited scope
  • Test and Commissioning Technician – Limited scope
  • Service and Repair Technician – Limited scope

The candidate will be assessed against the requirements of the route they wish to take i.e. a full technician will be assessed against all four assessment requirements and a maintenance only technician will be assessed against two of the assessment requirements.

Pre-requisites – In all cases

Candidates will need to demonstrate experience working within the industry on the pathway that was not practically assessed during the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Technician (version 1.1) Apprenticeship Standard. Candidates must be able to evidence the achievement of the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Technician (version 1.1) Apprenticeship Standard End-point Assessment. This must be in the form of an apprenticeship achievement certificate. Candidates must be registered within 12 months of the issue date of the apprenticeship certificate.

Furthermore, candidates must be able to evidence which pathway practical assessment (e.g. fire systems or security systems) was completed as part of the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Technician (version 1.1) Apprenticeship Standard End-point Assessment.

Please note, this assessment is not applicable to candidates who have previously achieved the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Technician (version 1.0) Apprenticeship standard.

Support and accreditation

This assessment is assured by BPEC and is supported by industry and recognised by the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme.

Relationship to other routes to competency cards

The BPEC Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Extension of Scope is mapped directly into the Fire Emergency and Security Systems Apprenticeship and therefore holders of the BPEC Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Extension of Scope Certificate are entitled to apply for a full JIB/ECS technician gold card, or crosshatch gold card where limited scope has been achieved.

Key Occupational Areas

The Fire, Emergency and Security Systems (FESS) Extension of Scope Assessment has been developed for candidates to demonstrate the level of occupational competence expected by the industry in the following key occupational areas (depending on the assessment the candidate is applying for). The assessment will contain elements of:

  • Risk Assessment and Health and Safety
  • Safe Isolation of a live electrical circuit
  • The interpretation of specifications, drawings, and diagrams
  • Planning and preparing to install, terminate and connect identified systems and associated components
  • Installing, terminating, and connecting identified systems and associated components
  • Inspection, testing and certification
  • Fault diagnosis and rectification of faults
  • The understanding and application of industry recognised procedures, working practices and the requirements of statutory and non-statutory regulations

 Extension of Scope candidates will be assessed on the following system disciplines:

  • An intruder alarm system
  • A surveillance system
  • An access control system

  1. Core Skills – Practical
  2. Service and Repair – Practical
  3. Installation – Practical
  4. Testing and Commission – Practical

Assessment approval
Centres wishing to deliver this assessment who are already recognised should complete and submit an Assessment Approval Form to BPEC Certification Ltd.

Prior to submission, centres should ensure they can meet the delivery requirements.

Centres who are approved to deliver this assessment and wish to extend delivery to satellite sites must seek approval for each additional site.

Physical resources
General – Centres must provide a safe environment for candidates and staff with appropriate policies and procedures in place which are adhered to.

Assessment/exam provision – centres must provide facilities and equipment which allow assessments and/or exams to be conducted in accordance with assessment criteria/guidance and exam procedures.

Facilities and equipment
The Centres will provide all consumable materials to be used by candidates required for the assessment.

All tools (including instruments), equipment and materials provided must be fit for purpose to the relevant British Standard, or European Standard, in good working condition and calibrated where required. Centres are required to hold sufficient stocks for the number of candidates being assessed, together with reasonable forward supplies.

Centres must have an adequate number of serviceable test instruments and test leads appropriate to the range, scale and category(s) of the assessment being undertaken.
