SGN opens UK’s first hydrogen training centre in Fife

Fife College

SGN, in partnership with Fife College, has opened the UK’s first dedicated hydrogen training centre for gas engineers at the college’s Levenmouth Campus.

The facility will train over 100 Gas Safe engineers this year to support the H100 Fife green hydrogen trial, helping to safely convert homes from natural gas to hydrogen.

Training will be delivered to local Gas Safe registered engineers by expert trainers with experience in delivering gas training with support from industry professionals.

SGN has developed the courses in partnership with Fife College for the past two years, alongside key stakeholders including BPEC, Energy & Utility Skills and the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM).

The centre offers hands-on experience with hydrogen appliances, developed with industry leaders including Baxi, Worcester Bosch, and Bosch Home Appliances Engineers will earn an official hydrogen qualification, supporting the UK’s transition to low-carbon energy.

Gary Smith, GMB General Secretary, called the centre “a milestone for the gas industry,” while SGN CEO Simon Kilonback said it reflects the company’s commitment to decarbonising homes through green gases. Fife College Principal Jim Metcalfe added that the partnership reinforces the college’s leadership in clean energy training.
